How it works

From published data to useful comparative insight.

GAUGED organises, standardises and benchmarks information from different sources within one coherent assessment.

1. Published data Educational, workforce and financial information.
2. Appropriate peers A defined group of genuinely comparable schools.
3. Benchmarking Measures placed within their peer distribution.
4. Comparative position Index, ranking, quartile and movement.
5. Management insight Evidence that helps direct questions and investigation.

Measure definition

Implied Teacher Contact Ratio

GAUGED calculates the Implied Teacher Contact Ratio as Pupil:Teacher Ratio divided by Average Class Size, using published DfE census data. This provides a consistent national benchmarking proxy. It is not the same as a timetable-derived ICFP Teacher Contact Ratio based on teaching capacity actually available and timetabled to teach.

100 = Peer Median

Each Index is centred on 100, representing the median performance of the relevant peer group.

Evidence, not a verdict

The reasons for a difference still require context, professional judgement and, where appropriate, further investigation.
